Where in the World / Africa are we?

Hey, just cut straight to the directions.

Below is a map of Africa, and then specifically South Africa. Note the green area in the North-West where it says "Kruger National Park". We are next to this area.

Africa map

Near the middle of the Kruger Park is where Amanzimlotzi is situated. Just a short hop from the Blyde River Canyon and the Kruger Park. We get the best of both worlds.

This is what Amanzimlotzi looks like from way up in the sky.

We seem to be so hard to really find that half our clients start out by getting hopelessly lost! Even with a GPS. We have had people give up just 700m from our gate, and go spend the night in a town 30km away, costing them more. The key to understand is that almost all the land around us is now part of Kapama. If you can get to their Gate 2, you are minutes from our door.

Coming from Joburg, via The Blyde river Canyon and Lydenburg.

Come along the N12 or N4 from Joburg to Witbank and Middelburg. Take the R540 to Belfast and follow it until you get to Lydenburg. From there, follow the R36 through one of the most scenic regions in South Africa - just be careful for logging trucks! The R36 goes through the Strydom Tunnel, down to the bottom of the Olifants (Elephant's) River valley. You will now turn right onto the R527 and continue for 17km. There is a road going to the right, marked "Orpen Gate and Klaserie" R531. Turn right and drive until you reach the village Klaserie, about 29km. The road goes under a railway track and about 200m further, you will find the R40 "Airport / Phalaborwa" road. Turn left. This road bends to the left and then the right, and then runs Northward parallel with the railway track. As the road straightens, you will see the BIG gate on your right, marked "Geurnsey, Thornybush, Klaserie Dam" etc. You may also notice a diagonal concrete wall towards the right of the gate with directions to all of the Kapama camps. Turn right & report to this gate.
(see below for directions from the Gate)

Coming from Nelspruit.

Drive towards the Northward along the R40 through the towns of White River, Hazyview, Bushbuckridge and finally passing Acornhoek. You are now only 7km from our gate. Stay on the R40 and do not turn into Acornhoek. Just keep straight ahead, right past the town and across the only traffic light & pass the big "Orpen Gate of Kruger Park" road which is on your right 4km from Acornhoek. Do not turn yet! Keep going straight on for another 2km. The road goes down, over the Klaserie River bridge, and as you climbs out of the dip, the R40 turns right, just before a train bridge. The R40 here is marked "Phalaborwa & AIRPORT", with a picture of an airplane - turn right here.
You are now only 500m from our gate. Do not phone me 23km from this point to ask directions please. Immediately after you turn right, this road bends to the left and then the right, and then runs Northward parallel with the railway track.

Coming from Hoedspruit.

Drive South along the R40 for 23km. Just past the Cheetah Project on the left, you will find a BIG gate on your left, marked "Geurnsey, Thornybush, Klaserie Dam" etc. You may also notice a diagonal concrete wall towards the right of the gate with directions to all of the Kapama camps. Turn left & report to this gate.

From Our Gate...

Ok, you reported to the gate and signed in with the security guard. There are maps showing all the Kapama camps and Timbavati. We are not featured on these, and NO, the guard does not know where we are either. We help pay his salary, but he thinks this is all Kapama. Check, you have Gate Two (2)... Ok, drive on.
If after about 4km, you see the Klaserie Dam on your right, you know for sure you are on the right road. Keep going straight, you may return here another day for fishing. From the security gate follow the road for a total of 7km until the tar (asphalt) road stops at the old, now defunct, Cheetah Inn Hotel.
Continue onto the dirt road & remember to reduce speed! Within 2 minutes, about 700 meters, you will see a yellow reflective triangle on the right, with 3 signs: "Amanzimloti, Calao, and Backpackers Inn". For visibility, there is also a white Olympic sign made with 5 tyres. Turn right & drive right up to the river, until you see two round buildings and maybe some electric lights (800 meters).
Down a cold beer, or a cuppa tea!
